Is it really safe?
According to Justine Carreon’s ELLE magazine article, “It’s more of an ick factor than a true health factor”, for a sexually transmitted disease to occur, it has to be transmitted directly from one person.
Is it gross?
It doesn’t have to be, although, some people will never be comfortable buying a swimsuit that has been worn by another person. In my case, I’m comfortable with it. 🙂 But it definitely all depends where do you buy it from, the swimsuit’s condition and cleanliness. And sometimes, you can also find thrifted items that have never been worn. The idea is to explore all of the available choices. In my case, when buying online, I prefer to use ThredUp.
It is a sustainable way to buy your swimwear.
Buying second hand swimwear definitely has a positive impact on the environment. According to ThredUp’s website, buying used swimwear has the equivalent impact of, for example, saving 10 days of drinking water. This means that to make just one new swimsuit, the environment impact of that piece is equivalent to all of the things listed below.
You can find designer swimwear at a fraction of the retail price.
That’s another positive factor about buying used swimwear. You can find very cute and in good condition pieces for very little compared to the original pricing. For example, I bought a Marysia Swimwear bikini set that estimates retail price at $144 for the top and $141 for the bottoms for $53.59 for the set! That’s definitely a steal!
Clean your swimsuit before use.
In terms of cleaning your suit, you can use a combination of mild detergent and vinegar to wash it. You can hand wash or wash it on the delicate cycle of your washing machine. You can also use baking soda, sink your suit in cold water and baking soda, then rinse and flat or hang dry.
So there you have it, now you should definitely consider buying second hand swimwear!
